This is why we write:
Every song is it’s own novel, an adventure, where every detail is intended to induce some sort of effect on the listener. Today’s music lacks real, genuine emotions, and universally sounds the same. It seems that today, music is in a slump; intellectual music is dumbed down, ignorance is promoted, and our simpler tastes are being met by simpler music.
All taste is relative, so I can’t promise you’ll enjoy my music. I can, however, say that I will attempt to bring something new and refreshing to the table, and if that’s what you’re looking for, then I’m your man. With every post, regardless of genre, my aim is to offer a song that tells its own story, possesses its own thoughts, and brings you to an alternate universe filled with whatever populates your head. To any potential listener, I hope that you not only leave with another song to add to your life soundtrack, but also a song that speaks to you in a way that mainstream music purely cannot.
Right now it’s late summer, 2012. My music taste has been rapidly evolving, especially through my first two years of college. This is a record of who I’m listening to and what I’ve been finding, whether it be old albums or new mixtapes. I just want to be able to look back at this log and see what songs my personal soundtrack consisted of and what they meant to me at the time. BEATSPILL is my musical journal, and you are more than welcome to read it.
My aim, and I think the main aim of BEATSPILL, is to share good music in hopes of influencing viewers to find their own. Is it not true that you gain a special affinity for a song or artist you find “on your own?” Of course, I’d like to introduce you to songs and artists that I love, but my main goal is to inspire you to explore the infinite amount of music available to us all. I find that most people don’t know where to start in their journey for new music. I want BEATSPILL to be that starting point. Finding one song that you take a special liking to can begin a long exploration into a particular singer, rapper, guitarist, producer, band, or genre. That is what makes music so exciting.
Before utilizing the internet, I was a shallow listener of music. Going beyond what I heard on the radio, and who I was limited to hearing about didn’t seem as necessary or intriguing to me. Back then, music wasn’t as important to me as it is now. As my tastes change, and I’m exposed to much more, I have an urge to share what I find in an attempt to maybe expand people’s tastes in the same way. What was once a taste consisting a few genres, has expanded into nearly every genre of music, from electro-synth to indie rock. Via BEATSPILL, I hope to show people that their tastes are not as limited as they may think.
